Botvinnik,Mikhail - Alekhine,Alexander [D41]
AVRO Holland, 1938
[Kasparov]
Peão Dama Isolado - Peões Isolados Bloqueados Mutuamente 1.Sf3 d5 2.d4 Sf6 3.c4 e6 4.Sc3 c5 5.cxd5 Sxd5 6.e3 [Botvinnik wisely decided to avoid  6.e4 Sxc3 7.bxc3 cxd4 8.cxd4 Lb4+ which was tested in the rematch Alekhine-Euwe, and instead went for a less-known type of position (at the time).] 6...Sc6 7.Lc4 cxd4 8.exd4 Le7 9.0-0 0-0 10.Te1 Positions with isolated pawns always belonged to Botvinnik's favourites. Thanks to his efforts to reveal all opportunities that were present in such positions, chess players have lost their almost mystical fear of playing with isolated pawns in the centre. This fear had been pervasive since Steinitz' impressive victories over Zuckertort and the powerful logical arguments the first World Champion put forth against creating unnecessary weaknesses. Botvinnik was the first to prove constantly that active piece play with pressure in the centre very often more than compensates for a slight defect of the pawn structure. 10...b6?! A very dubious decision. This move is playable after an exchange on c3. [10...Sxc3 11.bxc3 b6 12.Ld3 Lb7 13.h4! Lxh4 (otherwise 14.Ng5 is unpleasant) 14.Sxh4 Dxh4 15.Te3 with a very strong initiative for the sacrificed pawn, as was proved in later practice.;
 The best alternative is probably  10...a6 ] 11.Sxd5! exd5 12.Lb5 Despite the symmetrical pawn structure Black is now doomed to a passive defence. Weaknesses on the c-file and a slight discoordination of the black pieces give White an easy game in which he can develop his initiative. 12...Ld7? Now after the inevitable exchange of the light square bishops the Black position becomes even more vulnerable. [12...Lb7 13.Da4 Tc8 (or 13...Dd6 offered much better chances for a successful defence.) 14.Lf4 a6! ] 13.Da4 Sb8 As sad retreat, but after [13...Tc8 14.Lf4 Black has problems with his next move, while Ra1-c1 is threatening to finish him off.] 14.Lf4 Lxb5 15.Dxb5 a6 16.Da4 Keeping the knight on b8 in its misery. 16...Ld6 In order to relieve pressure. 17.Lxd6 Dxd6 18.Tac1 Ta7 19.Dc2 Te7 [Black's position looks reasonable, but unfortunately for him all the weaknesses remain permanent, e.g.  19...Sd7 20.Dc6 Dxc6 21.Txc6 and the endgame does not promise any sweet moments;;
or  19...f6 20.Df5 heading again for a queens' exchange.] 20.Txe7 Dxe7 21.Dc7 Dxc7 22.Txc7 After these useful exchanges the white rook penetrates the black ranks. But Alekhine rightly estimated that this rook alone was not able to cause serious damage. 22...f6! 23.Kf1 [Because after 23.Tb7? Tc8! 24.Kf1 b5 Black has taken control of the c-file and is out of any danger. So the white rook is pushed away from the seventh rank.] 23...Tf7 24.Tc8+ Tf8 25.Tc3! Going back into the bushes, to pounce again at the right moment. The pawn symmetry shouldn't fool anyone - Black is not able to restore the co-ordination of his pieces. In case of... (below) 25...g5 A smart idea - pushing his pawn on the kingside Alekhine reduces the importance of the seventh rank, which will sooner or later be dominated by his opponent's rook. [In case of  25...Sd7 ;
or  25...Kf7 the rook reappears in his camp with resounding effect.] 26.Se1 h5
1n3rk1/8/pp3p2/3p2pp/3P4/2R5/PP3PPP/4NK2 w - h6 0 0
[26...h6 27.Sc2 Kf7 28.Se3 Ke6 29.g4 is hardly satisfactory, but after the text move this line is playable, because the white knight doesn't get a stronghold on f5. Alas the problem comes from a different side.] 27.h4!! Forcing new weaknesses on the kingside. Now Black's defensive lines are breaking apart, his passive pieces cannot operate effectively all over the board. 27...Sd7 [27...gxh4 28.Sf3 cannot be considered seriously;;
27...Kf7 may have been the better option, though after  28.hxg5 (less clear is 28.Sf3 g4 29.Se1 Te8! 30.f3 (but even here 30.g3 Te4 31.Sg2 Txd4 32.Tc7+ Ke6 33.Sf4+ Kd6 34.Th7 the h-pawn gives White excellent chances) 30...gxf3 31.gxf3 Te6! and with the knight back in the game Black is still kicking.) 28...fxg5 29.Sf3 Kf6 30.Se5 and the difference in the knights' positions make a draw a miracle result.] 28.Tc7 Back in full control. 28...Tf7 29.Sf3! g4 30.Se1 A pendulum manoeuvre, preparing the square f4 to collect the bonuses - the pawns on d5 and h5. 30...f5 31.Sd3 f4 The key square is temporarily under control, but the pawn on f4 is added to the long list of objects for White to attack. 32.f3 [32.Sb4 was winning a pawn, but with mathematical precision Botvinnik fixes the new weakness. He knows: material benefit is just a short-term affair.] 32...gxf3 33.gxf3 a5 34.a4 Kf8 35.Tc6 Ke7 36.Kf2 Tf5 37.b3 There is no need to hurry. 37...Kd8 38.Ke2 Sb8 desperately trying to activate the poor horse: 39.Tg6! No way! One cannot escape one's destiny. [39.Txb6? Kc7 and 40...Nc6 gives Black counter-chances.] 39...Kc7 40.Se5 Making sure its counterpart will not participate in the game. 40...Sa6 41.Tg7+ [41.Tg5 was winning a bit quicker, the rook exchange leading to the promotion of the white pawn: 41...Txg5? 42.hxg5 Kd6 43.g6 Ke7 44.g7 But in fact the way to win the position is a matter of taste.] 41...Kc8 42.Sc6 Tf6 43.Se7+ Kb8 44.Sxd5 At last! 44...Td6 45.Tg5 Sb4 46.Sxb4 axb4 In the end the two knights, with such different histories, both disappear together. But it gives Black no satisfaction, since the rook endgame is absolutely lost. 47.Txh5 Tc6 [47...Txd4 48.Tf5 Kc7 49.h5 and the weak pawns are still around.] 48.Tb5 Kc7 49.Txb4 Th6 50.Tb5 Txh4 51.Kd3 resigned. Black has had enough. "From the 14 games I played in this tournament only once I felt that my opponent outplayed me - it was the game with Botvinnik in round seven" said Alekhine later. No further comments are needed! 1-0

Peões Colgantes - O Avanço d4-d5 1.d4 Sf6 2.c4 e6 3.Sf3 b6 4.Sc3 Lb7 5.a3 Na Defesa India da Dama (bem como na Nimzoíndia) a luta pela casa "e4" é de grande importancia. Sendo assim,o lance do texto,que caracteriza a Variante Petrosian,vem reforÇar esta idéia,já que impede a cravada do cavalo de "c3". 5...d5 6.cxd5 Sxd5 Tem a virtude de nao fechar a diagonal do bispo da dama ,mas por outro lado,deixa as brancas com uma maioria de peoes no centro. 7.e3 Sxc3 8.bxc3 Le7 [8...g6!? é uma boa alternativa , pois dificulta o ataque branco na ala do rei (Kasparov-Korchnoi , Londres m/1 1983).] 9.Lb5+ c6 10.Ld3 c5 11.0-0 Sc6 Nesta posiÇao é mais seguro desenvolver primeiro esta ala e,somente depois que a dama branca tenha se decidido a ir para a natural "e2" ,realizar o 0-0.  [11...0-0 12.Dc2 e as pretas estao obrigadas a deilitar o seu flanco do rei (Kasparov-Petrosian,Moscou 1981).] 12.Lb2 Tc8 13.De2 0-0 14.Tad1 [14.Dc2 Agora já nao seria efetivo,pois a torre negra está em "c8".É claro que as brancas podem a qualquer momento jogar "e4",porém Kasparov tinha concebido outra idéia.] 14...Dc7?! [15...Lf6 As pretas desejam ,com o surgimento dos peoes colgantes,criar alvos de ataque no centro branco.Em vao,pois com a abertura central o branco recebe condiÇoes de lanÇar-se a um ataque devastador contra o monarca inimigo.A tentativa de opor-se ao bispo de "b2" com  nao funciona: 16.d5 Se5 17.Sxe5 Lxe5 18.Lxh7+ Kxh7 19.Dh5+;

[Carlsen,M]
Aproveitamento do Par de Cavalos 1.d4 Sf6 2.c4 e6 3.Sf3 d5 4.Lg5 h6 5.Lxf6 I figured that this might be a reasonable choice since Onischuk doesn't usually play the Moscow with Black, and avoids it by choosing the sharper ¥h4 with White. 5...Dxf6 6.Sc3 c6 7.Db3 dxc4 I don't honestly believe that White has serious chances of obtaining an advantage in the lines starting with 7...¤d7 8.e4, but I felt that Onischuk probably wasn't ready for this challenge. 8.Dxc4 Sd7 9.e3 g6 10.Le2 [10.h4 is sharper and probably stronger, and certainly the critical line. It wasn't such positions I was aiming for, though.] 10...Lg7 11.0-0 0-0 12.Tfd1 I was quite happy with the outcome of the opening, but it is hard to believe that White has anything serious still. 12...e5 Perhaps not the most accurate, the waiting move [12...De7 was worth considering. The text should, however, be fine as well.] 13.Se4 The only way to play for an advantage, after 13.d5 ¤b6 or 13.dxe5 ¤xe5 White could even have ended up worse. 13...De7?! [13...Df5! was actually quite interesting, and what I had considered best during the game. Even though White is allowed to put the knight on d6 he has nothing. On the other hand, 13...£f5 is a difficult move to make, allowing the knight to jump to d6 with tempo.] 14.d5 cxd5 15.Dxd5 Sb6 [15...Sf6 16.Dd6 Dxd6 17.Sxd6 is a small plus for White as well.] 16.Dc5 Dxc5 17.Sxc5 Lg4 [17...Tb8 18.Tac1 is quite difficult for Black since he cannot develop his bishop comfortably. 18...¥f5 is met by 19.¤h4 and 18...¥g4 with 19.h3.] 18.h3 Tac8 Here I actually thought for some time, but now I cannot understand why, 19.¤xb7 is the only way to seriously play for a win. 19.Sxb7 Le6 White is a pawn up, but Black has some activity, and White has problems consolidating. 20.b3 I decided that this was the least of the evils, not being satisfied with lines like [20.Td2 Tc7 21.Sd6 (21.Sa5 Tfc8 22.Tad1 Tc2 with some activity,) 21...Td8 with compensation,;
20.Sd6 Tc2 21.Td2 Txd2 22.Sxd2 Td8 23.S2c4 e4 with a likely draw.] 20...Tc2 21.Lf1 Sd5 22.Lc4 Sc3 23.Td2 Txd2 24.Sxd2 e4 25.Kf1 Tb8 [25...Lc8 does not quite work: 26.Sd6 Td8 and now, instead of ¤xc8 ¦xc8, when White has minimal winning chances, there follows some nice tactics: (26...Sb5 27.Sxc8 Lxa1 (27...Txc8 28.Tc1 Sc3 29.Sxe4!) 28.Se7+) 27.Lxf7+ Kf8 28.Sxc8 Kxf7 29.Sc4 Sb5 30.Tc1 Txc8 31.a4+-] 26.Sc5 Lxc4+? [26...Sa4 Objectively this gives the best drawing chances: 27.Sxe6 Lxa1 28.bxa4 fxe6 29.Lxe6+ Kg7 30.Sxe4 It is on the other hand clear that defending this endgame would have been a long and probably impossible task.] 27.Sxc4 Tb5 [27...Sa4 leads absolutely nowhere: 28.Sa6 Td8 29.Tc1 Sc3 30.a3] 28.Sa6! My opponent had probably underestimated this move, after which he has big problems. The knight looks a little awkward here, but together with the other knight it takes away important squares from the rook, while preparing b4, which will free the rook and lead to relatively easily won position. 28...Lf8 29.b4! This is the key. I very much liked the motifs that occured after this move. 29...Lxb4 This cannot really be called a mistake, as the alternatives were just depressing. 30.a4 Tb7 31.Tc1 Now the pin will be lethal. 31...Sd5 32.Tb1 f5 [32...Te7 33.Sxb4 Tb7 could have been tried, but 34.Sxd5 Txb1+ 35.Ke2 Tc1 36.Sd6 f5 37.g4 should win without much trouble.] 33.a5 Taking away the b6 square, freeing the knight and finally sealing Black's fate. 33...Kg7 [Now 33...Te7 could be met by the funny little trick 34.Sxb4 Tb7 35.Sb6! ;
33...Tb5 34.g3! The most precise, after which Black might as well resign. (34.Sd6 Here Black at least has some kind of counterplay: 34...Txa5 35.Sxb4 Sxb4 36.Txb4 Ta1+ 37.Ke2 Ta2+ 38.Ke1 Ta1+ 39.Kd2 Ta2+ 40.Kc3 Txf2) ] 34.Se5 f4 As well as being lost, Onischuk was running out of time, which explains his last moves, which were rather desperate. 35.exf4 e3 36.fxe3 Sxe3+ 37.Kg1 Sd5 38.Kh1 And here he lost on time. An important and pleasing win for me. 1-0

Botvinnik,Mikhail - Smyslov,Vassily [E68]
World Championship 20th Moscow (14), 15.04.1954
[Kasparov]
Vassely Smyslov, the great innovator with the black pieces, had less influence on the development of openings theory when he played with the white pieces. Smyslov was simply satisfied with a comfortable, free game. His favourite choices with White were quite significant:
 A Coordenação das Forças 1.d4   1...Sf6 2.c4 g6 3.g3 Lg7 4.Lg2 0-0 5.Sc3 I guess Botvinnik was quite pleased that Smyslov didn't take the opportunity to switch to the Grunfeld with 4...d5. The King's Indian had never occurred before in Smyslov's games, while Botvinnik had great experience in this opening.
 5...d6 6.Sf3 Sbd7 7.0-0 e5 8.e4 c6 9.Le3 It is important to note that Botvinnik's last move was a novelty, at least for official openings theory. However, in his deep preparation of unusual openings (for his style at least) Smyslov predicted such a turn of events. With his counter he eventually put White's idea out of business! Today the best options are 9.h3 or 9.b3.
 [After the match in 1954 the King's Indian had practically vanished from Smyslov's playing repertoire. But in 1980, playing Bukal, he showed how profound his preparations for the first match with Botvinnik had been:
 9.h3 Db6 10.Te1 exd4 11.Sxd4 Se8! For years the world's best experts had been playing automatically 11...Re8 and experiencing certain difficulties in this opening. Smyslov's invention in 1954 (!) dramatically changed the character of the position.Wherever the white knight on d4 goes Black is able to develop effective counterplay. That is why white players today predominantly prefer 10.c5 – even Karpov has finally switched to this very sharp line. What could be a higher appreciation of Smyslov's knight retreat to e8 in the King's Indian.
] 9...Sg4! 10.Lg5 Db6 11.h3 exd4! 12.Sa4 Da6 13.hxg4 b5 Now the temporarily sacrificed piece will be returned, after which the multiple pawn weaknesses on both sides make the position dynamically equal.
 14.Sxd4 [Many years later, in 1992, Yussupov tried an improvement against me in the Linares tournament:
 14.Le7 Te8 15.Lxd6 bxa4 16.e5 Nevertheless after
 16...c5! Black holds the balance, e.g.
 17.Sxd4 (Yusupov's attempt to complicate the situation further with
 17.b4!? cxb4 18.Dxd4 Lb7 led to a murky position that eventually backfired. He underestimated Black's potential and eventually lost the game.
) 17...Lb7 18.Sb5 Lxg2 19.Kxg2 Lxe5] 14...bxa4 15.Sxc6 White takes up the challenge.
 [15.b3 was also playable: 15...Se5 16.Le7 Lxg4 17.f3 Tfe8 18.Lxd6 Tad8 19.c5 Lc8 is unclear(19...Sd3 20.Sxc6!) ] 15...Dxc6 16.e5 Dxc4 17.Lxa8 Sxe5
B1b2rk1/p4pbp/3p2p1/4n1B1/p1q3P1/6P1/PP3P2/R2Q1RK1 w - - 0 0
In return for the exchange Black has excellent compensation. The white pawns are vulnerable, his pieces disorientated, his king's position weakened.
 18.Tc1 [In case of 18.Dxd6 Lxg4 (18...Dxg4?! 19.Lf6!) 19.Ld5 Dd3 Black shouldn't worry too much.
] 18...Db4?! [18...Db5! is far more unpleasant for White.
] 19.a3 Botvinnik is missing an opportunity to push his opponent to the edge.
 [The tempting 19.Le7 Lxg4 20.Lxd6! would have left Black with a narrow path to avoid slightly worse, dull endgames.
 20...Db6 21.Dd5 Lf3! (21...Td8 22.Lc7 Txd5 23.Lxb6 Td2 24.Lxa7 Txb2 25.a3) 22.Dc5 Txa8 23.Lxe5 De6! 24.De3 (24.Lxg7?? Dh3 mating.; 24.Tc3 Lb7 25.Te3 Dh3 26.f3 is not clear, but roughly equal.
) ] 19...Dxb2 20.Dxa4 Lb7! Now White's king safety is becoming a serious issue.
 21.Tb1? The result of an obvious miscalculation
 [21.Lxb7 Dxb7 22.Tc3 h6 (22...Sf3+ 23.Txf3 Dxf3 24.Le7) 23.Lf4 Sf3+ 24.Txf3 Dxf3 25.Lxd6 Td8 26.Lc5 would have settled the game peacefully.
] 21...Sf3+ 22.Kh1 Lxa8! 23.Txb2 Sxg5+ 24.Kh2 Sf3+ 25.Kh3 Lxb2 Black has got quite enough in return for one queen. His four pieces get together quickly and organize the final attack on the defenceless white king.
 26.Dxa7 Le4 27.a4 Kg7 28.Td1 Le5 29.De7 Tc8 The rook is preparing to deliver the mortal blow.
 30.a5 Tc2 31.Kg2 Sd4+ 32.Kf1 Lf3 33.Tb1 Sc6 and White resigned.[33...Sc6 34.Dc7 Ld4 35.Dxd6 Txf2+ 36.Ke1 Te2+ 37.Kf1 Th2 requires no comment.]  0-1
